MEET SCOTT HOWELL

Scott Howell has been a professional fly fishing guide for more than 20 years and has built a thriving business fishing rivers in Southern Oregon. A true fly angler and tremendous asset to the sport of fly fishing, Scott spends over 300 days a year on the river and is a member of an elite class of guides who cater only to fly fishers on a year-round basis. A lover of the environment and the Pacific Northwest's important natural resources, he is proud of practicing a strict catch and release policy on all wild fish.

Scott was born and raised in southern Oregon and grew up in a fly fishing family -- for him, fly fishing is in the blood. His obsessive passion for fly fishing was handed down from his father, an avid steelheader and accomplished cane rod builder. Scott first started guiding on Oregon's storied Rogue River to help pay his way through a university education. After college, he embarked on an Alaskan adventure which led him to become a head guide at Katmai Lodge, one of the largest, most respected, and most widely-known fishing resorts in Alaska’s vast sport fishing tradition.

This seasonal employment enabled Scott to spend his time off chasing steelhead throughout the Pacific Northwest's best fly water. These off-season excursions allowed him to gain the extensive steelheading knowledge and experience for which he's known and valued today. Scott has aggressively fished full seasons on rivers from the north coast of California, to Washington's Olympic Peninsula and Puget Sound, to the pan handle of Southeast Alaska.

Working in Alaska blew the doors open for Scott across the Aleutian Chain in Russia. There, he helped pioneer the Kamchatka Steelhead Project by doing much of the exciting exploratory fishing. He then went on to manage a steelhead camp on the rugged and scenic Sopochnaya River in Kamchatka.

Upon his return from the vast, volcano punctuated tundra of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, Scott quickly returned to Alaska to guide for steelhead on the Aleutian Peninsula's Sandy River – a unique river few fly fishers get to experience.

In the midst of all this activity and exploration, Scott managed to transplant himself to British Columbia and the banks of the mighty Skeena River. There, he spent six years as a legal resident of Canada, fishing the Skeena system and exploring the lesser known rivers off BC's remote north coast. He also spent two winters living on Vancouver Island plying the fabled waters of Haig Brown and jet boating off the lower mainland coast of BC (an experience few have been lucky enough to have).

It may not seem possible to cram all this action and adventure into one young man's lifetime, but you’ll only have to meet Scott to believe it. Scott Howell has completely dedicated his life to fly fishing. Few have fished the number of steelhead rivers he has and even fewer know these fish like he does.
