About Scott

Scott Howell has been guiding more than 18 years and has built a business fishing rivers in Southern Oregon. He spends over 300 days a year on the river and is a member of a small elite crowd of guides catering only to fly fisherman year-round. He is proud of practicing a strict catch and release policy on all wild fish.

Scott was born and raised in Southern Oregon and grew up in a fly fishing family. His passion for fishing was handed down from his father, an avid steelheader and cane rod builder. Scott first started guiding on the Rogue to help put himself through university. After college, he went on an Alaskan adventure which led him to become a head guide at Katmai Lodge, one of the biggest fishing resorts in Alaska.

This seasonal employment enabled Scott to spend his off-season steelheading, fishing full seasons on rivers from the north coast of California, to Washington's Olympic Penn. and Pudget Sound, to the pan handle of Southeast Alaska.

Working in Alaska opened doors for Scott in Russia. There, he helped pioneer the Kamchatka Steelhead Project by doing much of the exploratory fishing. He then went on to manage a steelhead camp on the Sopochnaya River in Kamchatka.

Following Russia, Scott returned to Alaska to guide for steelhead on the Aleutian Peninsula's Sandy River - a unique river few fishermen get to experience.

In the midst of all this, Scott transplanted himself in British Columbia to live on the mighty Skeena River. There, he spent six years as a legal resident of Canada, fishing the Skeena system and exploring the lesser known rivers off BC's remote north coast. He also spent two winters living on Vancouver Island fishing the fabled waters of Haig Brown and jet boating off the lower mainland coast of BC (something few have done).

It may not seem possible to fit all this into one young man's lifetime, but you would have to know Scott to believe it. He has completely dedicated his life to fly fishing. Few have fished the number of steelhead rivers he has and even fewer know these fish like he does.
